Our Role

The Telecommunications group of University Information Systems (UIS) is the primary communications service provider for Harvard University. We manage the Harvard telephone switch and deliver a wide range of end-user and departmental services. The group is led by Nancy Kinchla, Director. Key teams and service offerings are summarized below, with links to more detailed information.

  • The Harvard Student Telephone Office (HSTO) provides convenient, cost-effective phone service and voice mail service for students who live in Harvard residences.
  • The Customer Services group serves Harvard faculty, staff, departments, and affiliates. This group implements requests for phone service, voice mail, and wireless phone service, provides consulting for departmental phone and voice mail applications, and assists with billing concerns.
  • The Harvard Telephone Operators assist callers from around the world, connecting them to Harvard people and departments and providing them with the most up-to-date directory information.
  • The Directory group is responsible for producing printed versions of the Harvard directory, manages distribution of the directory, and processes requests for changes in online and printed directory listings.
  • Engineering and Maintenance provides phone line repair services, technicians for phone and wiring changes, and assistance with communications wiring projects.
