Analog and ISDN Comparison

Analog

  • An analog line is used for basic telephone service. All analog lines are equipped with call transfer, call hold, speed dial, call forward variable, distinctive ringing (inside vs. outside) and 3-way conference calling. Call waiting is an optional feature.
  • The 9316 Analog set is a feature-rich set that allows button access to many of the basic features as well as caller ID, and message waiting indicator.
  • Advanced features are accessed by dialing a code such as *72 to activate call forwarding
  • Analog Lines are most commonly used for:
    • single line telephones
    • 2-line sets
    • Merlin / Legend systems
    • fax and credit card machines
    • Polycom conference phones
    • fire alarms and emergency phones

Analog Pricing FY09 Monthly Rate

Analog Line $19.00
9316 Set (Standard Analog Set) $2.75
Total $21.75

ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network)

  • ISDN lines use digital transmission which allows for multiple call appearances. An ISDN line should only be used in cases where call coverage is required.
  • A call center with heavy call volume where frequent transferring is required is an appropriate use of ISDN lines.
  • ISDN telephones can have multiple call appearances of their own number, other ISDN lines, software numbers and 1 appearance of analog numbers.
  • Advanced features are accessed by pressing a feature button rather than dialing a feature code.
  • The intercom feature with 2-digit dialing is available to members of the intercom group.

9924 Set (Standard ISDN Set; includes power / NT1) $18.50

Call Appearances and Call Waiting with Caller ID

When you change a set from ISDN to Analog, any ISDN set that previously had call appearances of that line will drop off when the line is changed. You do have the option to add back one call appearance of the Analog line on up to 7 ISDN sets for coverage purposes. There is a small conflict when you have a call appearance of an Analog line on an ISDN set with the Call Waiting with Caller ID feature. You may want to consider the following 3 scenarios to make a fully informed decision.
  • If an Analog line has a call appearance on an ISDN set and if it has the Call Waiting /Caller ID feature, the second call will NOT go into voicemail. The person calling in will just hear a ring no answer. However, with this Call Waiting/Caller ID feature, the Analog user will hear the call waiting tone and has the “option” to pick up the second call.
  • If an Analog line has a call appearance on an ISDN set and if they do NOT have the Call Waiting feature, the second caller WILL go into voicemail after the appropriate number of rings set in MacStar (CFB).
  • If the Analog line does not have a call appearance on any ISDN set, both the Call Waiting /Caller ID feature and the Call Forward Busy (CFB) feature will work. The user will have option to pick up the second call when they hear a call waiting tone and if they do not, the call will go to voicemail.
