Voice Recognition / Automated Directory Assistance

UIS Telecommunications now offers an enhancement to the existing directory assistance service. We are pleased to say that the voice recognition system is being used extensively during the times that live directory assistance is not available.

Accessing the system is simple. When Harvard operators are not available, a script is played informing callers of emergency options, giving the on-line Directory address, and also providing an option to access the voice recognition system. However, you may dial the voice recognition system at any time by calling (617-384-LIST) or from your office phone 4-LIST (4-5478). Callers are prompted to say ‘Faculty, Staff or Student’, then will be prompted to say the name of the person they want to reach. The number will be read back to the caller before connecting to the requested party. If the caller would like to get an email address, they simply say ‘email’ and the email address will be read to them.

In addition to the benefit of having 24x7 directory assistance available, we are hearing that this system is providing individuals with a safer means of communicating with colleagues while on the road.

617-384-LIST can be programmed into your cell phone, enabling a connection to any faculty/staff person or student by simply ‘speaking’ their name.
