Hosted IP Centrex (HIPC) Program
Voice Over IP (VoIP) technology has emerged as an important component of Next Generation Communications networking. The strategic implication of this technology and its applications continue to be explored at Harvard University, with the proposition and benefits of:
- a next-generation replacement for aging telecommunications infrastructure and time-division multiplexing (TDM) technology;
- increased productivity and collaboration between staff, customers and external work groups;
- greater support for mobility, video and other enhanced services and applications.
University Information Systems (UIS) is sponsoring a multi-site Hosted IP Centrex (HIPC) Program with Verizon to utilize VoIP and other enhanced services such as IM, Softphone, Web Conferencing and Fixed Mobile Convergence (FMC) at specific Harvard locations. The program rollout will begin in the Spring/Summer of 2009 and will last for a period of 90 days.
The purpose of the program is to:
- further explore the viability and benefits of the VoIP technology in the true Harvard working environment, including the ability to scale;
- specifically evaluate the features, services, deployment and support methodology of the Verizon HIPC offering, including billing and E911 services’
- explore and refine the technical architecture and impacts to deploying such a service for potential future implementation throughout the University;
- define processes and assess impact on Harvard internal organizations to procure, implement and support the HIPC service;
- evaluate the end user experience and learning curve;
- understand and explore cost models for the HIPC service;
- understand Verizon’s support roles and processes and evaluate Verizon as a potential future partner for IP and Next Generation Communication systems.
