    General Questions

  1. How can I become a VoIP Pilot Member?
      Although the selection of the initial pilot members is complete, new members may join by special request. For details please email susan_delellis@harvard.edu.

  2. Why VoIP, when Centrex works just fine?
      VoIP phone sets offer the same functions as the Centrex phones, but offer more flexibility in new functions (such as XML applications, directory access, MeetMe conferencing, and music on hold) and administration (relocations can happen more quickly).

  3. Isn't the call quality worse than my cell phone at times?
      Call quality is reliant on the quality of the network link (and equipment) between any two IP phones. Although Harvard in general has been a leader in employing the most current and efficient networking technologies, there are some areas of the campus that are upgrading links and equipment at a faster rate than other areas. New phones that are connected to universities outside the U.S.A. must be connected to the Harvard data network via the fastest available link speeds (Internet2).

  4. What happens when the network is offline?
      A VoIP call to any other phone (VoIP, centrex, cell, etc) must be routed through the data network first, so the IP phone sets do not work when the network is offline.

  5. What if I don't want another phone - is there a program that simulates a VoIP phone?
      Yes. There is a program called Cisco IP SoftPhone that can be run off a desktop computer, and used with a headset. For details contact candace_holman@harvard.edu.

  7. How do I find out someone's VoIP phone number?
      Press the directories button on your IP phone's auxiliary keypad. Select 4 - Corporate Directory, enter the person's last and/or first name, and press the Search softkey. To see a list of all the numbers, just press the Search softkey without entering any data in the lookup fields.

  8. What is the Voice Mail number?

  9. How do I transfer a call?
      Answer call, press "Transfer" softkey, and enter the new number.

  10. How do I put a call on hold? How do I take a call off hold?
      Answer call, press the "Hold" softkey. To take the call off hold, press the "Resume" softkey.

  11. How do I forward calls?
      From a VoIP set, with the handset not in use, press the "CFwdAll" softkey. Thenpress the destination number. You will see the prompt "Forwarded to [new number]" on the bottom of your phone display. Press "CFwdAll" again to remove the forwarding.

      From the User Options web site, select "Forward All Calls to a Different Number", select the check box on the next screen, and enter the destination number. To disable the call forwarding, deselect the check box.

  12. Can I forward my VoIP set while I work at home?

  13. How can I tell who called while I was out?
      If you missed a call while you were out, "1 Missed Call" will display on the bottom of your display. You can press directories and 1 - Missed Calls to see whose calls you missed.

  14. How can I recall a number I forgot?
      If you remember the last time you dialed the number from your VoIP set, you can press directories and 3 - Placed Calls, and scroll down to the date and time to recall a phone number. You can also look up VoIP numbers in the Corporate Directory on the phone set.

  15. How do I set up Speed Dials?

      From the User Options web site, select "Add/Update your Speed Dials." Enter the number as you would dial it on your phone set (i.e., use 9 before external calls and 9 1 before toll calls, or just 5 digits on an internal call) and enter some text to help you identify the number. Press Update and you should immediately see the changes on your phone display.

  16. How do I activate or disable Music on Hold?
      Music on Hold is activated by default in most cases. If your phone doesn't play music when you put someone on hold, please contact your Help Desk.

  17. How do I change Music on Hold?
      There are some other non-copyrighted musical selections available. In the future, these will be published so that users may select their music on hold, but for now it can only be changed by contacting candace_holman@harvard.edu.

  18. How do I change my Voice Mail options?
      Voice Mail options are set exactly as in your Centrex phone. See the instruction booklet "Voice Mail System Faculty/Staff User Guide", available from the Telecommunications Office.

  19. How can I change the contrast on my screen?
      Press settings, 1 - Contrast, and the Down and Up softkeys to change the screen's contrast. Press Ok, then press Save.

  20. Can I customize the ringer on my VoIP set?
      You may choose from a listing of 26 custom ring types, and review them from your phone set. Press settings, 2 - Ring Type, scroll up and down to select a ring type, then press Ok, and press Save.

      In the future, you may be able to use your own recording as a custom ring type.
