Email Aliasing Policy
www.aliasing.harvard.edu
We at the UIS Network Operations Center are pleased to be able to provide Harvard
community members with a unique alias of the form firstname_lastname@harvard.edu.
Periodically we will be notifying you of system, policy, and technical updates
regarding aliasing service.
The following is a reminder of a previous
update regarding the policies for obtaining an alias. On August 18, 1997, we
began enforcing these policies. If you have questions about how they apply to
you or your department, please contact the Network Operations Manager, Jay Tumas
(jay_tumas@harvard.edu).
Alias Policy Reminders
- Harvard e-mail users are required
to provide a valid Harvard University ID before being assigned an
@harvard.edu alias.
- The form of the alias will be firstname_lastname@harvard.edu.
In a few cases where this may not be unique, the NOC will work directly with
you to establish an appropriate and unique alternative.
- Harvard aliases are for use by Harvard-affiliated
people, for the purpose of conducting the university's business: teaching,
research, and administrative support for these activities. When an alias
user's employment at Harvard is terminated, the alias will ordinarily be terminated
after 30 days. This may vary on a case-by-case basis with approval
from a department head or director.
- We ask your participation in assigning
only one alias per person. Requests for additional aliases for
special projects or other unique situations should be referred to Jay Tumas.
- Please see the current Acceptable
Use Policy concerning use
of the Harvard name in electronic contexts from the University Provost's
web site.
Special Circumstances
- For individuals who do not have Harvard
ID numbers such as contractors, consultants, University affiliates, or for
faculty members who have not yet begun residence on campus, the following
guidelines apply.
- Consultants, contractors: Apply
for generic Harvard ID at the Harvard University ID Office.
- University affiliates: Apply
directly to Operations Manager Jay Tumas (5-8515 or jay_tumas@harvard.edu).
- New faculty members: Apply
for temporary HUID number at the Harvard University ID Office. (This will
later be replaced with a permanent faculty ID).
