Telephone Sets

FAS Undergraduate Housing

FAS rooms are equipped with a Harvard – provided red touch-tone telephone. This phone must be plugged into the common room telephone jack. Calls within Harvard and to 9-911 emergency services can be made on the common room line. Expanded service can be ordered through PAETEC; click here , or call 6-8100 from any campus phone or 1-800-960-6555

All other Housing locations, Harvard Housing and Residential Housing

PAETEC recommends that students bring a phone set with them or buy one as soon as they arrive. If you will be sharing a room, you may want to designate one person to handle this task. You must select a touch-tone phone to use many of the features of the Harvard phone and voice mail systems.

FAS Proctors and Tutors

FAS proctors and tutors are provided dial-tone (includes on-campus calling, incoming calls, toll-free and emergency 9-911 access) and a red telephone in the common room.

Leave your cordless phone at home

PAETEC strongly discourages the use of cordless phones in Harvard residences, where the density of phone lines can result in your being incorrectly billed for "crossed" calls made from someone else's phone. If you nonetheless choose to use a cordless phone, you will be held responsible for crossed calls charged to your phone.

Plugging in your phone

Most Harvard residences are equipped with a double phone jack. The top outlet in the jack is marked VOICE; the bottom outlet is marked DATA. Always plug your phone into the VOICE outlet, even if you are using a modem.

If your phone jack only has one outlet, you can assume it is a voice outlet and plug your phone into it.
