When is phone service "turned on"? It depends upon where you reside.

Common rooms and single dorm rooms
At the beginning of the 2007-2008 school year, the phone lines in common rooms (such as the living room in a suite) and single dorm rooms are already active in FAS, GSAS and Harvard Law School . Simply plug in your red touch-tone phone set, and you can begin making calls.

FAS Undergraduate Dormitories

Residents of the FAS housing locations are provided with a red telephone that should be connected to the telephone line in the common room. This telephone line allows you to call within Harvard, receive incoming calls, dial toll-free calls, and place emergency calls to 9-911. You may upgrade ($20/per month) your line to allow unlimited local calls and access to long-distance service. Visit www.uis.harvard.edu/student_telecom for calling plan details. Specific international rates at the web site. To upgrade your common room line, add a bedroom line,or establish your long-distance account, contact PAETEC at 6-8100 from any campus phone or 1.800.960.6555.

GSAS, and Harvard Law School Housing

Your line is configured for local calling in the Boston Metropolitan area. Your PAETEC PBN (Personal Billing Number) can be used for long-distance calls.

Note for GSAS students at Cronkhite : Lines are not active. Contact PAETEC to activate telephone service at 6-8100 from any campus phone or 1.800.960.6555 or www.campuslink.paetec.com/harvard.html . Telephone service (no free common room line) must be paid by student.

For all other Harvard Housing and Residential Housing

For all other schools and residential housing, the lines are not active. Contact PAETEC to activate telephone service and/or to obtain a Personal Billing Number (PBN) for long-distance calls at 6-8100 from any campus phone or 1.800.960.6555 or www.campuslink.paetec.com/harvard.html . Residential apartment information

If you choose Verizon Service (click here for Comparision chart), you must call Harvard Student Telephone Office (496-8200) for a check digit number to provide to Verizon.

* Note for suites/bedroom

Phone lines in suite bedrooms are NOT extensions to the common room; they are individual phone lines which are NOT active at the beginning of the school year. To activate a bedroom line - with a different phone number from the common room line -- you must request service from PAETEC. Click here to sign up for PAETEC service using an online form or via phone at 6-8100 from any campus phone or 1.800.960.6555.
